She was a social worker, a community builder, and the founder of the Congressional Black Caucus Spouses. She led the Ralph J. Rangel Foundation, providing scholarships to students across the country. And for over 46 years, she served as Vice Chair of the New York Foundation for Senior Citizens, work that resulted in the Alma Rangel Gardens, 89 units of affordable housing for low and moderate income seniors right here in Harlem on West 137th Street.![]()

She passed on September 16, 2024, at 99 years old. Senator Cleare honored her life with a formal New York State Senate mourning resolution.![]()
