New York Foundation for Senior Citizens

24 Hour Emergency and Crisis Intervention Services

9-11 Award
The Foundation has a long and successful history of providing 24-hour crisis intervention and emergency services for New York City's elderly. A poignant example of such interventions, occurred on and after the 9/11 World Trade Center attack, during which the Foundation's staff immediately mobilized to deliver crisis intervention and emergency support services to the many elderly ground zero area residents, who were seriously affected by the catastrophe. The Foundation shared those experiences with the United States Department of Health and Human Services to assist in the development of social service plans for the nation's seniors, in the event of future disasters.

The Foundation received special recognition for providing vitally needed services for the elderly residents of ground zero, both on and after the September 11, 2001 World Trade Center attack.

The Foundation's President, Linda Hoffman, distributed grants to reimburse elderly residents of ground zero for the cost of unexpected expenditures for necessities, such as air filter machines, cell phones and medications, due to the World Trade Center attack. These grants were made possible through a contribution received by the Foundation, from Magnolia Management, Inc., Hagerstown, Maryland.
